Apple still has the highest global market share for tablets, according to recent data, and all its iPads are among the best you can buy, including the entry-level 11th-gen iPad, iPad Pro M5, iPad Air M4 and the seventh-gen iPad Mini. Our expert, award-winning staff selects the products we cover and rigorously researches and tests our top picks.
In November 2013, Apple released the iPad Mini 2, which remained at 7.9 inches and nearly matched the hardware of the iPad Air. In October 2012, Apple released the iPad Mini with a 7.9-inch screen size, about 2 inches smaller than the regular iPad, but less powerful than the then current iPad 3. Mini tablets are smaller and weigh less than slates, with typical screen sizes between 7–8 inches (18–20 cm). As of March 2013, the thinnest tablet on the market was the Sony Xperia Tablet Z at only 0.27 inches (6.9 mm) thick. The size of a slate varies, but slates begin at 6 inches (approximately 15 cm). Samsung’s line of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold phones are able to unfold into small tablets, and companies like Asus and Lenovo created large 12 and 17-inch class tablets which can fold into a smaller footprint for use as a laptop.
The chip was adopted by Psion, Palm and Nokia for PDAs and later smartphones, camera phones, cameras, etc. In October 2013, Intel’s foundry operation announced plans to build FPGA-based quad cores for ARM and x86 processors. Intel’s x86, including x86-64 has powered the “IBM compatible” PC since 1981 and Apple’s Macintosh computers since 2006. Since 2013, restaurant chains including Chili’s, Olive Garden and Red Robin have adopted them. Such devices allow users to order food and drinks, play games and pay their bill.
Best Android tablet
- B&N originally allowed arbitrary apps to be installed, but, in December 2011, excluded third parties.
- They can use battery life conservatively because the processor is significantly smaller.
- In 2012, Microsoft released Windows 8, which features significant changes to various aspects of the operating system’s user interface and platform which are designed for touch-based devices such as tablets.
- Who’s it forThis is a versatile, high-performance tablet for non-Apple users that’s not only a good productivity tool but an impressive entertainment device that also works well for Cloud gaming.
- Still, if those features are important to you, you don’t want an Air.
Throughout the 20th century devices with these characteristics have been imagined and created whether as blueprints, prototypes, or commercial products. Thereafter, tablets rapidly rose in ubiquity and soon became a large product category used for personal, educational and workplace applications. The touchscreen display is operated by gestures executed by finger or digital pen (stylus), instead of the mouse, touchpad, and keyboard of larger computers. Unlike laptops (which have traditionally run off operating systems usually designed for desktops), tablets usually run mobile operating systems, alongside smartphones.
- They can run processor-intensive graphical applications in addition to mobile apps, and have more ports.

- The new Pro iPads add even faster M4 chips, step-up OLED displays with better brightness and contrast and refresh rates, and are a bit thinner and lighter.
- Mobiles were used more often in play than video game consoles, board games, puzzles, play vehicles, blocks and dolls/action figures.
- Thereafter, tablets rapidly rose in ubiquity and soon became a large product category used for personal, educational and workplace applications.
- Simple tablets are mainly used as media consumption devices, while 2-in-1s have capacity for both media consumption and content creation, and thus 2-in-1s are often called laptop or desktop replacement computers.
- BlackBerry Tablet OS is an operating system from BlackBerry Ltd based on the QNX Neutrino real-time operating system designed to run Adobe AIR and BlackBerry WebWorks applications, currently available for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet computer.
The CPUs have been incorporated into tablet PCs over the years and generally offer greater performance along with the ability to run full versions of Microsoft Windows, along with Windows desktop and enterprise applications. On July 24, 2013, Google released an upgraded version of the Nexus 7, with FHD display, dual cameras, stereo speakers, more color accuracy, performance improvement, built-in wireless charging, and a variant with 4G LTE support for AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. Many modern tablets are based on smartphones, the only differences being that tablets are relatively larger than smartphones, with screens from around 7 inches (18 cm) to 14.6 inches (37 cm) measured diagonally, and may not support access to a cellular network.
That’s paired with up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. Why I like itThe Astra 2 continues the RedMagic trend of packing nearly every top-of-the-line spec imaginable into its products. Who should skip itFor artists or anyone else who needs the best display quality, or those who require the best possible performance, you’ll want to get the full-fledged S10 Plus or the newer S11 models. And if you have an older Samsung tablet to trade in, the price becomes even more affordable. Also, it has incredible battery life, hitting 17 hours and 45 minutes in our tests and earning a CNET Lab Award for Longest Battery Life for tablets. Both tablets run on an upgraded Samsung Exynos 1580 chipset instead of the more powerful MediaTek processors found in their standard counterparts (the Exynos 1380 chipset powers the Galaxy Tab S9 FE tablets).
Hardware
Where it does excel is for reading indoors, and it’s a budget-friendly tablet for taking notes and drawing. Who should skip itThose looking for a true Windows laptop for work. Microsoft shrunk the price and screen of its Surface Pro for people who view the tablet PC not as a primary daily driver but as a versatile secondary machine for browsing the web, watching YouTube and Netflix and playing the occasional mobile game. All of that tech leads to some fantastic gaming performance, aided by a unique liquid-cooling system that adds some flash to otherwise clean design.
Hardware
The iPad Pro and Air models just got big hardware upgrades, with the expensive Pro introducing OLED displays and a new M4 chip for the first time, along with an improved Pencil Pro. Some tablets are more premium, which may be worth it if you value a more future-proof device, better OLED displays or faster chips. We’ve picked out the best of the best, and these tablets can do it all, including checking email, managing finances, testing your art skills or casually browsing YouTube and watching videos. While finding the best tablet for you isn’t hard, knowing where to start can be overwhelming, and that’s where CNET’s testing and reviews can help. The best tablet is the one that’s versatile enough for all kinds of use cases from home, school or work. As your main computer, its performance and size may be too limiting.
Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE
The M5 chip works with Apple Intelligence, Apple’s set of AI features, and has plenty of power to last for years of OS updates to come. The original RedMagic Astra tablet was one of my favorites last year for its stellar performance, handy software extras and pleasing design. If you want a larger screen, battery life and saving some money are most important to you, the S10 FE Plus is the way to go. Once again, that’s true for the Galaxy Tab S10 FE and Galaxy Tab S10 FE Plus, which start at $500 with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Who should skip itThe iPad Pro offers a high-contrast HDR custom OLED display, a thinner design, a Face ID camera and Lidar on the back, though those features come at a price jump of $400.
Who’s it forThis is a versatile, high-performance tablet for non-Apple users that’s not only a good productivity tool but an impressive entertainment device that also works well for Cloud gaming. Who should skip itAlas, this new basic iPad doesn’t get you Apple Intelligence (the chip doesn’t support it), and it still works only with the simple USB-C Pencil or the first-gen Pencil (with a gtbet casino USB-C-to-Lightning adapter), not the Pencil Pro. Just as importantly, the base version of the iPad 11th-gen comes with 128GB of storage instead of 64GB (hallelujah!). I’ve also selected some affordable budget tablets, which are good for consuming media or playing casual games, but don’t quite qualify as a professional productivity tool or true laptop replacement.
